Check out Elmhurst’s offerings on Museum Day

Everyone is invited to explore three museums for free and participate in family-friendly activities during Elmhurst Museum Day. This 22nd annual event, which coincides with International Museum Day, will be from 1-5 p.m. May 20. Participating are the Elmhurst History Museum, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, and the Elmhurst Art Museum.

“It’s a longstanding tradition,” said Patrice Roche, marketing and communications specialist for Elmhurst History Museum. She noted that, like the international event, Elmhurst Museum Day “has the same goals of reminding people of the educational opportunities and cultural arts exchange that happens at museums worldwide.”

Elmhurst has a unique feature which makes it possible for people to easily visit each participating museum. “We have three museums that are located within walking distance of one another, and they’re all very different,” Roche said.

Visitors who would rather ride than walk or bike to the museums, can hop on a free Explore Elmhurst trolley. The museums are also located a few blocks from the Elmhurst Metra train station’s Union Pacific West Line.

Charles M. Schulz Museum. They then created a traveling exhibit out of it and we are really lucky to be the first stop in a tour that will make its way all over the country.”

Snoopy will visit the History Museum that day and pose for photos. “We will also have a few stations of activities that will be family friendly,” Roche said. There will be face-painting, a paper airplane station, and

Utah veteran relives time aboard B-17 bomber he learned to fly …

SALT LAKE CITY — Buckled into a seat on a vintage World War II-era B-17 bomber, Richard Stucki looked equal parts the excited passenger and contented former aviator the soon-to-be centenarian actually was.

Stucki was enjoying a VIP flight Monday aboard the Madras Maiden — one of only a dozen B-17 aircraft still flying today — as an early birthday present from his family. He turns 100 on July 19.

The flight was arranged by one of his grandchildren who contacted the Liberty Foundation, which owns and tours the muscular, four-propeller airplane that will be on display this weekend at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Public tours will be available Saturday and Sunday at TAC Air, 303 N. 2370 West.

During World War II, the Cedar City native transferred from the Army to the Air Forces, where he became a flight instructor at Hobbs Army Air Base in New Mexico. It was there he became familiar with the mighty B-17 by making daily flights in the aircraft, he said.

“We started at six in the morning and flew till noon,” he explained. “We flew all the time and always had four students.”

Flash forward to current day and he was complimentary of the pilots manning the cockpit of the B-17 on this sun-drenched spring day.

“This was nice. (I) didn’t have quite the view I use to have sitting up front,” he joked. “It was a nice ride. They did a good job taking off and landing both.”

Recalling his days as an instructor, Stucki

Don’s Hobbies: a mix of old and new pleasures

Nestled inside a former fire station from another era is a little shop of hobbies that is a mix of old and new pleasures.

Don’s Hobbies, 2219 73rd St., owned by 83-year-old Donald Dezek, may feel more like a museum than a place to score that hard-to-find hobby item.

It is actually three stores in one:

Dezek’s section features model kits for cars, airplanes, ships and the like.

Rinaldi’s Hobby Time, helmed by David Rinaldi, focuses on model kit cars and related items.

Paul Little’s Steampunk, featuring steampunk and Bristol Renaissance Faire clothing and accessories.

The shop is a destination for those seeking items not readily available in bigger craft/hobby stores.

Though the threesome have different stories about their businesses and their merchandise, they all have the same love and passion for what they do.

Don was bitten by the model-building craze when he was 10 and dreamed of becoming a hobby distributor.

“I was always a hobbyist,” he said.

After many years of working in electronics, he began working for a hobby store owner and eventually bought into the business. Shortly afterward, he was bought out. It wasn’t long before he opened his own shop on Roosevelt Avenue.

In 1979, he moved to his current location, doubling the size of the shop.

While the models were always hot, he also sold bookshelf games, role-playing games, history and war games.

“Sales were good. Model building was really good,” he recalled. “It was a fun time.”

Rinaldi built model cars and collected die-cast cars as a youngster. When he was old enough, the Vietnam Army

How to Buy a Used Jet

Any number of experts can help you buy a jet. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. But I did buy a jet — my first — recently, and the experience taught me some lessons. It is entirely possible that you and your company will employ an expert or two to help you find a turbofan-powered airplane and that my experience will seem bush league to you. It did not seem bush league to me.

Since buying the jet, I’ve spent several hours listening to recorded messages when looking for information from Rockwell Collins (FMS database), CAMP (maintenance tracking) and Williams International (engines). These phone calls include a lot of “press 1 for this,” “press 2 for that” instructions. So, picture my imaginary phone interactions with the Jet Buying Gurus (JBGs) when I set out to buy one:

JBG: “Thank you for calling the Jet Buying Gurus. Press 1 if you need a jet. Press 2 if you want a jet. Press 3 if you don’t need a jet, but want one anyway.”

Me: #3

JBG: “OK, I hear you want a jet but don’t need one. What kind of jet do you want but not need? Press 1 if your average mission is 500 nautical miles or less, 2 if 500 to 1,000 miles, 3 if greater than 1,000 and 4 if you don’t know.”

Me: #4

JBG: “That’s fine. I understand you don’t know your typical mission. Are you going to be the pilot?”

Me: “Yes.”

JBG: “OK, I will assume you will fly your

Suspect in serial killings lived in a tidy California suburb

The man who authorities said Wednesday is among the worst serial killers and rapists in U.S. history is a 72-year-old Vietnam War veteran, former police officer and grandfather who lived in a tidy, suburban California home with a neatly kept green lawn.

Joseph James DeAngelo was described Wednesday as an odd but decent neighbor in the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights. Neighbors said he mostly kept to himself, but was quick to anger and could often be heard loudly cussing in frustration over a landscaping issue or other minor annoyance.

“You can tell he’s a very meticulous person,” said neighbor Kevin Tapia. “His house is always perfectly painted. His grass is always cut. He gets down around all the rocks on his lawn and is cutting to make sure it’s just perfect.”

Another neighbor, Natalia Bedes-Correnti, said DeAngelo appeared to be a “nice old grandpa” but he cursed loudly and often over misplaced car keys and the like. She said one of DeAngelo’s adult daughters and a granddaughter lived with him in the neighborhood where children ride their bikes home from school.

“He liked the F word a lot,” Bedes-Correnti said.

His history also shows a seemingly ordinary life for the man police are now linking to crimes committed by the suspect variously known as the Golden State Killer, the
