Good eats at Gillespie Field

Gillespie Cafe

2015 North Marshall Avenue, El Cajon

First time I see the sign, I think hot diggity: A pie café on an airfield! So I walk in off Marshall Avenue to where all the hangars with the apartments above form a little village here. “Speer Hangars,” says the plinth outside. Then you get this bunch of buildings for flying schools and the small offices of aircraft companies. Closer you come, more you hear the sound of propellers whirring and engines coughing into life.

And then, whoa! Rumbling right past on the runway behind the hangars, this huge bomber. Like, World War Two bomber. Four engines, red nacelles, drab green fuselage, “Witchcraft” painted along the nose. Guy’s sticking up through a roof hatch. Talk about witchcraft: feels like we’re in some time-switch here.

By now I’m on a cool patio looking out onto the apron. Oh, right. So, not Gilles Pie Café: Gillespie Cafe. And actually, Gillespie Field Café.

The B-24, designed and built right here in San Diego

I head inside, to this bright, totally diner diner, with cream walls decorated with airplane pictures, an ancient-looking wooden propeller, and arched windows looking out onto neat rows of parked planes. One red-ochre wall has a really cool copper model plane. Another has a poster honoring two lady pilots who won the 2009 “Palms to Pines” air race from Santa Monica to

Investigating cracks in airplane windows

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – A Southwest Airlines flight was diverted Wednesday after a passenger window cracked mid-flight. Thankfully no injuries were reported.
But it’s another scare for the popular airline.  Contact 13 looked into aviation data to see how often this happens.

This is the second incident in the last three weeks for Southwest Airlines involving a window. On April 17, a passenger died after being partially sucked out of the plane.  Debris from an engine explosion had blown out the window.

We searched aviation accident databases for the last few years and found in August 2011, a Delta airline flight about to take off from Atlanta experienced an engine failure. The plane was damaged including, “…an impact scar on the outer pane of a window.”

On March 4, 2015, a Frontier Airlines flight crew saw sparks coming from under the windshield. They “…heard a popping sound and observed the windshield cracking.”

And in June 2015, a United Express flight was on final approach when a fire started in the cockpit. It appeared to start from a power wire routed at the bottom of the windshield.

FAA data suggests passenger window failures are rare.  Each exit window has three panes and federal data shows only 26 failures of the outer pane worldwide in the entire Boeing 737 history.

Southwest also said there are multiple layers of panes in each aircraft window and no emergency landing was declared in Wednesday’s incident.  The aircraft has been taken out of service for maintenance review.

36 Hours in Montgomery, Ala.

10) 3 p.m. ARTY HAPPY HOUR

If any neighborhood is poised for a comeback, it’s the nearby Cottage Hill district, home to elegant 19th-century homes. James Weddle moved from Austin, Tex., to buy a couple and has opened Goat Haus Biergarten in one of them, a restored Victorian on a bluff, where visitors may grab a lager from Ghost Train Brewing in Birmingham ($5) and sit at a picnic table on the lawn overlooking the Alabama River. Next door 21 Dreams: Arts Culture Collective features art shows in its front rooms that serve as a gallery.

11) 7 p.m. SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK

Its new artistic director, Rick Dildine, aims to make the state’s biggest theater, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, even bigger by expanding its offerings. Presenting musicals, dramas, original productions and, of course, Shakespeare, its two stages share the grand grounds of Blount Cultural Park, also home to the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, about 10 minutes from downtown. For over 25 years, the festival has sponsored the Southern Writers’ Project to commission and produce new plays on topics ranging from the quiltmakers of Gee’s Bend, Ala., to the famous University of Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Upcoming shows include “Annie,” July 4 to 15.

12) 10 p.m. NIGHTCAP AND NOSH

Strong winds and blowing sand increase workload at local body shop

Blowing sand and dust can damage your vehicle

EL PASO, Texas – If you feel sand is blasting your face on windy days, imagine what it can do to the paint on your car.

Victor Lopez, with Texas Custom Body and Paint, tells KVIA his business usually has cars brought in from auto owners complaining about paint damage to their cars when winds intensify.

Lopez says many of the autos brought to the shop are from the Ft. Bliss area, specifically near the Beaumont hospital area. He says that’s because winds are much stronger in that area thanks to it’s proximity to mountains.

Lopez says auto owners likely see damage to their cars when winds reach between 50 and 60 miles per hour.

Raheem Bosworth, 27, lives in the Northeast and he’s keeping a close watch on the breeze, hoping

China to Build Hypersonic Engine Plant

As we come closer to the third decade of the century, it becomes more and more obvious that the future deterrent for war between nations will not be nuclear, but hypersonic. The United States, Russia, and China are all racing to create hypersonic weapons, be it in the shape of missiles or airplanes.

Back in February, news of a hypersonic plane design coming from China broke. The surreal airplane is on paper capable of reaching speeds of 3,700 mph (6,000 km/h), or nearly six times the speed of sound.

The hypersonic, also known as a supersonic combustion ramjet, or scramjet, would cut the normal travel time between Beijing and New York from 13 and a half hours to under two hours.

The airplane has two sets of wings, one pointing forward and the other backward. The entire system is said to have held well during wind tunnel tests of the scaled-down model.

But drawing up a scaled-down plane with no moving parts was an easy task for Chinese engineers. What the hypersonic aircraft lacks is the physical engine that would power it.

Solving that problem has come to the attention of Chinese authorities, which now seem willing to invest heavily in the development of hypersonic power units.

According to South China Morning Post, China is currently drawing up plans to build a manufacturing facility for the mass production of the said engines. The facility is to be built in Hefei, eastern China, by the Institute of Mechanics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences
