Wake Up Liberia, A Dictatorship Is Brewing With US$1billion Scheme

By Rodney D. Sieh, [email protected]

Dear Readers,

It wouldn’t’ take a rocket scientist to figure out what is unfolding in Liberia.  In less than six months, the new government is entangling itself in not one, but now two questionable and shady financial transactions surrounding road construction that has all the markings of money laundering.

All or most of you have been following our coverage of the administration’s quest to secure a US$536 million through a shady company out of Singapore called Eton Financial Private Limited.

A colleague, economist Sam Jackson summed it up best: “When they doing their corrupt deals they throw away their education. Someone lending you US$536 million to build roads. They pick their own contractor. Where is the performance bond from the contractor? Which insurance company providing the bond? What’s the international rating of the insurance company? Corruption is a damn cancer. Educated people just act blind.”

As if the controversy over that deal is not enough, FrontPageAfrica has now come into possession of a contract for yet another loan agreement that has all the markings of shadiness and money laundering.

Payday for Burkinabe Businessman?

Remember Mr. Mahamadou Bonkoungou, the Burkinabè businessman friend of President George Manneh Weah, who until recently emerged as the owner of an airplane President Weah has been using for his presidential travel?

Well, it turns out that he is now on the verge of securing a whopping US$420 million loan agreement to finance the design, construction, and

Capture-and-collar deer study collecting valuable survival data

For the last four years the state Game, Fish and Parks Department has been capturing and fitting whitetail deer from local herds with radio collars as part of a statewide study on deer mortality.

“We started in northeast Brown County where we first captured adult deer in winter 2015, and later that spring we captured fawns for the study,” said Nick Markl, a resource biologist based out of the Webster GFP office. “In 2016 we expanded that study area, which we call a data analysis unit or DAU. We call this particular unit DAU-9, and it now includes parts of Brown, Spink, McPherson, Edmunds and Faulk counties.”

Markl said 150 additional deer were captured and collared within the unit earlier this year, bringing the four-year total to upwards of 550.

“We’ve identified some wintering herds in the unit and spread the collars out when we did the capturing,” Markl said. “We wanted to get a better, more widespread sample to get an accurate representation of the entire herd.”

Tracking deer

Deer of various age classes — adults, juveniles and fawns — have been collared as part of the study.

“We do this to figure out survival rates at each stage of a deer’s life,” said Alex Elias, wildlife damage specialist. “After we collar the deer we monitor them once a month with radio telemetry equipment. Each individual deer collar has its own frequency that is unique to that specific deer. Monitoring is done from an airplane with an antenna attached to the strut of each wing.

CMO’s top 8 martech stories for the week – 31 May 2018

Microsoft acquires conversational AI startup

Microsft has acquired Semantic Machines, a Berkeley, California-based startup that has developed a new approach to building conversational artificial intelligence (AI).

The company is led by technology entrepreneur, Dan Roth, and two prominent natural language AI researchers, UC Berkeley professor, Dan Klein, and Stanford University professor, Percy Liang, as well as former Apple chief speech scientist, Larry Gillick.

With the acquisition of Semantic Machines, Microsoft aims to establish a conversational AI centre of excellence in Berkeley to push forward the boundaries of what is possible in language interfaces, Microsoft AI and Research chief technology officer, David Ku, said in a blog post. Combining Semantic Machines’ technology with Microsoft’s own AI advances, it aims to deliver powerful, natural and more productive user experiences that will take conversational computing to a new level.

HubSpot launches Slack integration

HubSpot has launched a new Slack integration that turns Slack conversations into HubSpot CRM Tasks, sends notifications to Slack triggered by activities in HubSpot, and enables slash commands to search and post contact records from HubSpot.

HubSpot built the Slack integration for sales professionals who use both Slack and HubSpot to increase productivity, but who lose time switching between tools to log tasks or look up contact information in HubSpot. This integration aims to help a sales rep to create a task and associate it with a contact, company, or deal in HubSpot directly within Slack.

This integration is the first step in a relationship between HubSpot

To See How Autonomous Vehicles May Take Over, Dean Kamen Says Look What Happened In Airplanes

Dean Kamen started one transportation revolution when he invented the Segway Human Transporter, the first self-balancing, electric-powered transportation machine. So his views on the next transportation revolution, autonomous vehicles, are germane. And for the future of AVs, the industry that produces them and the consumers who ride in them, Kamen points to a previous paradigm shift in how we get around: airplanes.

As founder of DEKA Research and one of the world’s foremost inventors and engineering innovators, Manchester, N.H.-based Kamen became famous not just for Segway, which he introduced in 2001, but also for creations including the IBOT Mobility Device — a sort of wheelchair-cum-Transformers — a portable dialysis machine, a vascular stent and many more. His current focus is on bioengineering marvels such as an advanced prosthetic arm for returning injured shoulders.

Kamen was on hand in Detroit recently to preside over a national tournament for FIRST Robotics, another brainchild, which pits technology-minded teams of school kids against one another to build robots that compete in contests reflecting the skills, savvy and technical brainpower of their creators.

“There are engineers who think we’re ready for self-driving cars and others think that it’ll never happen,” Kamen told me. Sadly, he said, many engineers make those assessments with ideological motivations in assessing, for example, the safety-readiness of automated vehicles in the wake of recent high-profile accidents during which drivers seemed to be depending on autonomous systems, or autonomous systems failed under testing.

In that regard, Kamen said, he’s “shocked that no one is looking at

Model planes help 9-year-old boy soar beyond his obstacles

Kaden Steckenrider’s plane soars above Paducah’s Model Air Park.

PADUCAH — Pilots from across the region will descend on Paducah this weekend for the Paducah Aero Modelers Taking Flight for Charity. The model airplanes they fly are so much more than that. They are impressive, and sometimes very expensive, machines.

The youngest pilot there, 9-year-old Kaden Steckenrider, has found a passion and sort of therapy in flying.

Kaden and his dad, Stephen, pick up a plane that crashed onto the Model Air Park field.

Quiet blue skies come alive with the buzz of an engine. Kaden lives to fly.

“As soon as he grabbed it, he’s loved it ever since,” his mom, Trish Steckenrider, said.

Kaden said he has a few things on his mind while flying: “Is something gonna’ break, or is something not gonna’ break while I’m in the air?”

Getting ready is half the fun. Kaden and his dad, Stephen Steckenrider, make sure every piece is in the right spot.

Kaden lives with a visual processing disorder, and flying acts as a kind of therapy for him.

“Helping him get set up. Helping him fly,” Stephen said. “I knew nothing about flying when he first started.”

Trish said flying has actually helped Kaden. “It almost acts as physical therapy for him, because of the hand eye coordination that has to happen when you fly. It’s really helped him out a lot,” Trish said.

Kaden has a visual processing disorder, although he was
