Inside NBN’s fibre to the curb rollout

Although it is still early days for the roll out of fibre to the curb, NBN says that its efforts to ensure a smooth migration process from the legacy copper network to FTTC have paid off when it comes to end user satisfaction.

But although the company is quick to talk up the performance characteristics of the technology, including a relatively easy upgrade path to gigabit speeds, NBN says that the additional challenges in rolling out FTTC, particularly compared to fibre to the node (FTTN), mean that it’s not ready dump its use of FTTN.

NBN formally launched FTTC services in April. Currently around 1.5 million premises are expected to be connected using the technology.

Connecting homes and businesses FTTC involves two key construction challenges for NBN: Rolling out its Distribution Fibre Network significantly closer to households, and ensuring that the pits where the fibre meets a household’s copper are of an adequate size and in good nick.

Like FTTN, FTTC involves using a home or business’ existing phoneline. However instead of having copper run to a pillar that connects to a powered node (which can serve up to 384 premises), the copper only runs a relatively short distance to a telecom pit on the footpath outside the premises.

In the pit, the copper is connected a distribution point unit (DPU). The DPUs are then connected to fibre. Unlike the nodes used for FTTN, the DPUs don’t require independent power: FTTC uses a

We Fly: The Lancair Turbo Mako

Since Cirrus first certified the SR20 nearly two decades ago, the company has grown to become by far the most productive single-engine piston manufacturer in the world, with its sleek composite airplanes known for good speed, comfort, advanced avionics and the BRS full-airframe parachute. Many manufacturers have tried and failed in the hunt for a piece of Cirrus’ market share. The latest contender, Lancair, with its new Mako, hopes to take not just a little nibble — but a shark bite — at Cirrus.

Like the Cirrus and Columbia/Cessna TTx, which was recently taken out of production, the Mako is a four-seat composite low wing with large windows and a stellar glass avionics suite. But, being in the Experimental category, the Mako is a completely different animal. Unlike its certified competitors, the Mako provides nearly limitless options, allowing customers to truly customize their airplanes. And this airplane has some terrific features that I had never experienced before.

Lancair’s airplanes have become known as the Ferraris of the Experimental market. The company’s founder, Lance Neibauer, had the philosophy that airplanes weren’t just about performance. They also had to be beautiful. And most pilots agree that Neibauer designed high-performance works of art.

It all began with a company called Neico Aviation in the early 1980s in Gardena, California, where Neibauer introduced the Lancair 200. He soon moved the company to Santa Paula, where it remained for nearly a decade and started offering an accelerated kit-manufacturing process through a fast-build option, a program that several

Built with love

WAYNESBORO — Andy Johnson’s wife, Christine, had always wanted a realistic, intricately made dollhouse. So over 10 years, Johnson hand-built her one. But this wasn’t just any dollhouse — it was a detailed replica of her grandfather’s home.

The idea came about after he built his daughter a dollhouse. Johnson and his wife were driving through West Virginia, where her grandfather’s house once stood, when he was inspired to replicate the home.

“I told my wife, ‘If I can get enough information about the house, I’ll make you one,”’ he said.

The house, which no longer stands, was in Pickens, West Virginia. They found a book on the history of the area and the house was included. It was built in the 1890s and the architecture was inspired by the building styles of Luxembourg.

Johnson is originally from southern New Jersey and Christine Johnson, who passed away in November of last year, was from Culpeper.

The couple had moved to Waynesboro in 2005.

Johnson worked his full time job, as an engineer for the U.S. Postal Service, and built the house in his free time. He picked up the exacting skills needed to work on such small-scale details at a young age by making model airplanes, a craft he has continued to enjoy throughout his life.

The dollhouse is about four feet wide, and aside from the furniture and some of the detail, it was entirely hand built. The house comes apart in 14 pieces and the outside walls slide out to see inside. It pays immaculate attention to detail from the inside

George Cecil Monroe

George Cecil Monroe, age 89, went home to Jesus on June 24, 2018. He lived at the Powell Valley Care Center with his wife of 64 years. George was born on April 9, 1929, in Kemp, Texas, to Claude and Sarah Monroe. George married Donna Schock on Dec. 11, 1954.

George’s ambition and ample skill set provided him the opportunity to work in many business arenas. He owned George Monroe Trucking and Hay Service and worked in the oilfield providing winch truck services, followed by several years of oilfield consulting. George owned Monroe Crane Service when he and Donna ventured to California for a time. Upon their return to Powell, George was a successful business owner for many years, owning both the K-Bar and Clyde’s Bar.

George loved bareback riding in his earlier years and met his wife Donna at a rodeo in Bridger, Montana.  George enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and later went on to get his pilot’s license and had several planes of his own.

George and Donna raised four children, who all respected and admired his sense of humor and tireless work ethic. George is survived by his daughters, Lynn Johnson of Pocatello, Idaho, Peggy (Rex) Snyder of Riverton, Janet (Darwin) Holte of Grand Junction, Colorado, and his son Casey (Jill) Monroe of Powell; his brother Mike Piret of Billings, Montana; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Meet the 21-Year-Old CEO Revolutionizing Luxury Air Travel

As a boy, Zander Futernick always dreamed of becoming a pilot. For his eighth birthday, his father built him a little airport with a concourse, replete with model airplanes—and when they traveled, he would venture into the cockpit at the end of each flight. “I’d sit in the seat and they’d give me my wings,” he recalls.

Later, he developed an obsession with flight simulators—and as a teen, he joined the Young Eagles, a program that teaches aspiring aviators how to pilot small Cessnas. But the hobby became difficult to sustain as he got older. “Flying a plane isn’t like riding a bike—you can’t just put it down,” Futernick asserts. “You have to do it consistently, all year long, and as I grew up it became complicated for me to do that.”

Eventually he started working in the family business, a three-generational firm dealing in real estate and logistics management. He studied marketing, psychology and corporate finance at NYU’s Stern School of Business, priming himself to follow in his father’s footsteps. But in the end, his fascination with planes propelled him down an entirely different path—one that combined his entrepreneurial spirit with his passion for aviation.

In 2016, at just 20 years old, Futernick founded ZED Aerospace: a Miami-based startup dedicated to developing innovative in-flight technologies, funded by investors from the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. The company’s first product, AURA, aims to bridge the gap between commercial travel and private jet charter services, promising to deliver ultra-luxurious

Boeing HorizonX leads $16M investment in Matternet drone delivery venture

A Matternet drone flies over Zurich. (Matternet Photo)

Boeing HorizonX Ventures has taken the lead role in a $16 million Series A funding round for Matternet, a California company specializing in drone delivery operations in urban environments.

Other investors include Swiss Post, Sony Innovation Fund and Levitate Capital, the companies said today. Matternet aims to use the funds to expand operations in the U.S. and other parts of the world.

Last year, Matternet won Swiss approval to conduct on-demand drone deliveries of medical samples to hospitals in partnership with Swiss Post. The operation makes use of the company’s autonomous M2 drones and its Cloud logistics platform as well as Matternet Station, a six-foot-wide hub that can dispatch drones for delivery and receive them for recharging.

Matternet is also partnering with Mercedes-Benz Vans and Siroop, a Swiss online marketplace, on a pilot project for on-demand delivery of e-commerce goods. Mercedes-Benz’s Vito vans serve as mobile landing platforms for Matternet drones that deliver the goods.

Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration gave Matternet the go-ahead to participate in pilot projects to deliver lab samples and medical supplies to hospitals in California and North Carolina.

Today, Matternet is joining the World Economic Forum’s Drone Innovators Network, which is aimed at advancing safe, sustainable, global mobility systems. Boeing is already a partner in the network.

“Matternet’s technology and proven track record make the development of a safe, global autonomous air mobility system a near-term reality,” Brian Schettler, managing director of
