China’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods struck just as one of its biggest meat importers was rushing a shipment from California through Shanghai customs. Now Suzhou Huadong Foods is saddled with a stack of unaffordable American steak.

Only three containers of frozen produce including prime rib and pork loin came through before the new levy slapped as much as 500,000 yuan ($75,000) on each of the remaining half-dozen crates, according to Gong Peng, the importer’s general manager.

“We have no choice. We have to eat the costs,” Gong said in an interview. “We are guaranteed to dramatically lower our purchases of meat from American ranchers.”

Triggering what China calls “the largest trade war in economic history,” the U.S. on July 6 imposed a 25% duty on $34 billion of Chinese imports. Beijing immediately responded with tariffs on U.S. soybeans, meat and vehicles. Suzhou Huadong, which supplies supermarkets such as Walmart’s Sam’s Club in China, is just one of the early victims. For automobiles and whiskey makers to companies along the complex global supply chain that defines modern manufacturing, it is a moment of reckoning as they grapple with higher costs and whiplashes from some of the earlier business decisions.

The ability of tariff-hit companies to weather the conflict may partly depend on the amount of stock they managed to import before higher levies kicked in. But once those supplies run down, they’ll have to absorb the tariffs or pass them on to customers.

If you’re near Meiringen in Switzerland over the next few days, look up and you might be treated to an incredible spectacle, as almost 100 highly skilled aeromodellers take to the skies above the scenic Haslital region for the 2018 FAI F4 World Championships for Scale Model Aircraft.

The competition, which is held every two years and attracts the best pilots and builders of scale aircraft from around the world, started this weekend and runs until July 14.

According to the registration statistics, this year’s 10-day event involves some 69 adult Scale Model Aircraft pilots, plus three junior competitors and 25 Scale Model Helicopter pilots.

Between them, the participants represent a total of 16 different countries, making this a truly international competition.

Also in attendance at today’s Opening Ceremony were FAI President Frits Brink, FAI Secretary General Susanne Schödel, and FAI Sports and Events Director Markus Haggeney.

Scale Model Aircraft

Scale Model Aircraft are radio-controlled airplanes or helicopters that are based on manned aircraft and are built to exact scale, down to every rivet and screw.

A huge amount of work goes in to building and painting them to ensure they are identical to the full-size originals in everything but size.

And the aim of pilots participating in competitions in this F4 category is to represent the full-scale prototypes as closely as possible in the air as well.

So the type of flying done differs significantly from that seen at most other aeromodelling events!

The intensifying trade war adds to China’s challenges, including signs that its effort to tame its debt problems could slow economic growth. Investors have turned skittish as a result. China has now entered bear market territory — when prices drop by more than 20 percent from a peak — with its market hovering at levels not seen since a rout three years ago set off a domino effect in global trading.

The Trump administration promised Tuesday night to impose tariffs on an additional $200 billion of Chinese products, including chemicals, handbags, petroleum and fish. That move came just days after the United States started levies on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods like robotics, ball bearings and even airplane parts.

The Chinese government pledged Wednesday that it would take unspecified countermeasures. It has matched previous tariffs dollar for dollar, leading some investors to worry that trade could get costlier still.

David French, an executive at the National Retail Federation, called the latest round of tariffs by the Trump administration a “reckless strategy that will boomerang back to harm U.S. families and workers.”

Mini Australia’s latest out-of-home campaign is tapping into a combination of geographic and contextual data sets in order to deliver more dynamically targeted content to consumers.

The latest campaign, which has been developed in partnership with Vizeum Melbourne and Posterscope, will run across digital out-of-home sites across the country and utilise specific data sets, such as location, traffic, time of day and weather conditions, to more contextually target creative to passing consumers. The mix of out-of-home sites has an emphasis on proximity to airports and stadiums.

The content being used is designed to showcase the vehicle’s new range of connected benefits such as in-car, real-time traffic updates, a concierge service and optional union jack brake lights.

Mini Australia national marketing manager, Alex McLean, said bringing creative concepts to a large digital format is a step change for its campaign efforts.

“Mini has historically enjoyed being a quirky brand, so it is excellent to be able to incorporate unique creative that really demonstrates the USP of these vehicles, ultimately influencing drivers at timely moments,” he said.
