Up in the air with style, flair

TUSCARORA, Pa. (AP) — Curiosity about flight has led to all types of flying machines in the past century, taking people around the world, but there is still a simple pleasure and thrill of being able to send a model plane into the sky.

That could be seen Saturday in Ryan Township as the Tuscarora R/C Flying Club began its two-day 50th anniversary Aerorama air show celebration at its own flying field near the White Birch Golf Course. There were plenty of model planes and drones for everyone to see. One youngster got a thrill watching aerial displays above the field, all radio controlled by skilled hobbyists identified as “pilots.”

After so many rainy days, Saturday’s hot sun and today’s sunny forecast had club President Ed Pollack feeling happy. When asked between running from one place and another to get the event ready, he gave credit where he believes credit is due.

“You know what? There is a deity involved,” Pollack said. “We’ve had monsoons the last three weeks. Now we have two good days, and it’s supposed to start all over again on Monday. I asked everyone a month ago to pray. Our prayers have been answered.”

In announcing the anniversary, Pollack said the club is adding to its purpose beyond being an organization for flying model airplanes.

“Our mission this year is to introduce drone flying to the public and generate public awareness of the growing interest and necessity of drone flying,” Pollack said. “We already have made inroads with

20 people killed after old-time plane crashes in Swiss Alps, authorities say

Police in southeastern Graubuenden canton (state) said a plane crashed Saturday on the Piz Segnas mountain above the Swiss Alpine resort of Flims, striking the mountain’s western flank about 8,330 feet above sea level.

All 20 people on board an old-time propeller plane were killed Saturday after the aircraft crashed in the Swiss Alps, authorities told Swiss media.

Police in southeastern Graubuenden canton said the JU-Air’s JU-52 HB-HOT aircraft crashed on the Piz Segnas mountain above the Swiss Alpine resort of Flims, a place popular with hikers and also contains a glacier. The plane holds 17 passengers, two pilots and a flight attendant.

“The JU-Air team is deeply saddened and is thinking of the passengers, the crew and families and friends of the victims,” JU-Air wrote

Psychiatrist builds models of planes flown by Iles – Herald

QUINCY — Watching Charlton Heston’s movie “Midway” as a 10-year-old spurred Dr. Salvador Sanchez’s interest in World War II — and its fighter aircraft.

“The first thing I did after watching the movie was I went to a hobby shop and bought one of the models for the Zero, the Japanese fighter,” Sanchez said. “At that time, I didn’t know the first word about modeling. I got my bottle of white glue and started trying to put together a plastic model. That didn’t go very far.”

It didn’t take long for Sanchez to gain some better building skills while growing up in Mexico, and after a break for college, medical school and residency, the Blessing Hospital psychiatrist picked up the hobby again, always keeping a project in progress on his workbench.

He’s donated more than 100 models of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War planes to the Illinois Veterans Home, hoping to help its All Wars Museum have one of the largest displays of military miniatures in the country, and two of his most recent projects had a role in Saturday’s dedication of Col. George J. Iles Elementary School.

Sanchez presented models of the P-51 Mustang C flown by Iles and the Tuskeegee Airmen in World War II, commissioned by Quincy Public Schools, to Iles family members on hand for the dedication and to display at the school at 3111 N. 12th.

“I love the opportunity to honor our veterans and
