One dead, 2 missing in plane crash off Long Island

Oct. 14 (UPI) — A plane that departed Connecticut bound for South Carolina crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island on Saturday, killing at least one individual on board.

Two other passengers aboard the Piper PA-34 are still missing as the National Transportation Safety Board investigates the crash, which happened just before noon Saturday south of Westhampton Beach, N.Y., according to the Hartford Courant.

“I was looking to see if I could find the plane and I couldn’t see it, and then ‘phoom,’ it was done,” crash witness Tim Carbone told CBS New York. “It was like the engine was stopped immediately.”

The located body has not yet been identified. Authorities were still searching for the two other passengers and the plane’s fuselage overnight into Sunday morning. But small parts of the airplane have been located, Newsday reported.

The plane took off in Oxford, Conn., stopped briefly in Danbury and was headed to Charleston, S.C.

LE ROY — In October 1928, the streets of Le Roy grounded to a standstill.

The three-day grand opening of the airport located on Asbury Road beginning on Oct. 12 caused the streets to become jammed as 64,000 people tried to get a glimpse of the most modern and well-equipped private airports in the world at the time.

“You could not move in Le Roy, there was so many cars coming out,” said Lynne Belluscio, Le Roy historian. “Newspaper accounts said the only way you could get to the airport was getting out of your car and walking.”

There were four runways and the hangar was large enough to house the Tri Motor Fokker, the Friendship, and 15 small planes. The roof of the

At Colegrove Park Elementary, education commissioner and students trade lessons

NORTH ADAMS — Some fifth-grade students at Colegrove Park Elementary School got a guest teacher on Friday, who taught math and science lessons using peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, MM candies and rubber band-propelled balsa wood model airplanes — though not all at once.

In those moments, the school’s administrators and teachers looking on saw someone who could not only make their students laugh and ask questions, they also saw in him a potential ally who has the power to make positive policy shifts in education across the commonwealth.

State Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Jeffrey C. Riley spent most of his day visiting with education professionals and students in the Berkshires, with a particular interest in the process of teaching and learning.

He also heard from local public school leaders on the issues of declining enrollment, a rising range of student needs and the desire for a state funding formula that drives more equity into the delivery and distribution of high-quality instruction and resources.

“I’m looking for a sense of school climate. I’m looking for engagement and is [instruction] related to state standards and how it’s relating to students’ abilities,” he said. “We kind of lost our way on that and we need to get back to focus on good teaching.”

Learning should be fun

Riley’s interactions with teachers and students at Colegrove Park Elementary were the highlight of the commissioner’s visit, for everyone involved it seemed. He first visited Elizabeth “Betsy” Elder’s kindergarten class, where a pair of children

9 Famous Collectible Airplanes You Should Have Bid On At Auction

Whether it’s a car, home, jewelry, or piece of art, if an item going to auction has some kind of celebrity cachet, chances are good that it will garner additional attention—and perhaps draw higher bids. Consider, for example, the 1962 Lockheed JetStar that Elvis Presley owned briefly in the mid-1970s. After the King sold the aircraft in 1977, it sat on a runway in New Mexico for more than 35 years, collecting dust and rust. Nevertheless, when the plane went to auction in 2017, it sold for $430,000.

Even though the price was well below the $2 million presale estimate, it was still a lot to pay for an aircraft that couldn’t fly and needed a complete interior and exterior restoration. And, in fact, it was too much to pay. It seems the new owner experienced buyer’s remorse, because the JetStar went back on the block this past summer. There’s no word from the auction company, IronPlanet, on whether the seller made back his money.

The JetStar is not the only Elvis plane to go to auction, and it’s not the only one with a celebrity or pop-culture connection that helped it fetch plenty of notice, though not necessarily the owner’s asking price. The following aircraft became famous because of a role they played in a movie, on TV, or in real life, and at one time or another, each was available to the highest bidder.

Blockchain Eyed For Holy Grail: Aircraft Availability

Mention blockchain in casual conversation and interlocutors probably will think of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin—if anything at all. But now executives and advisors across commercial aviation, aircraft leasing and the aftermarket are starting to take a careful look at the distributed ledger technology to see how to use it to make real money themselves. In fact, some experts say blockchain could be responsible for putting some companies out of business—at least in the long term—if they do not adapt.

“A big vision of blockchain is eliminating middlemen that stand between an airplane and a part, and there is a whole industry out there standing between an airplane and a part,” says Chuck Marx, who was U.S. advisory leader for aerospace and defense at PwC before leaving to become an independent advisor on digital thread and blockchain for the firm’s clients.

“It’s huge,” he adds. “We’re going right to the heart of the business model. They’re going to have find other ways to add value to the ecosystem, and they can.”

Steffen Parth, manager for business development, innovation and products in the aircraft base maintenance unit of Lufthansa Technik, also sees great potential. “Look at the finance industry—here blockchain is already kind of a game-changer. It is a bit more difficult to predict blockchain’s effect on other industries, but I would say that aviation provides an environment where blockchain can be especially beneficial.”

High on the list of potential beneficiaries could be manufacturers, aircraft operators and
