Science of sisterhood: Girls STEM Institute encourages education, ‘authentic selves’

Description of the following video:

Boeing Loses a 737 MAX Order to Airbus

Saudi Arabian airline Flyadeal over the weekend canceled a provisional order for up to 50 737 MAX jets, and instead chose to go with an Airbus model, according to reports. This is the second cancellation of a MAX order since the troubled single-aisle plane was grounded world-wide in March.

Indonesia’s Lion Air, the first airline involved in a 737 MAX crash, canceled its orders in March. But otherwise, cancellations have been rare. Boeing (ticker: BA) airline customers are taking the view that MAX issues can and will be fixed…

Focus: X-Ray Movie Reveals Origin of Metal Splashing

Metal 3D printing uses a laser to fuse metal powder particles into intricate objects, but the beam often creates flying blobs of molten metal that can lead to manufacturing defects. The cause of this “metal spatter” was poorly understood, but a new x-ray movie has captured the process in detail. Researchers observed the formation of tiny liquid bumps on the molten metal surface that play a central role in producing the airborne

ANALYSIS: How the A321XLR gained initial order momentum

When looking at the launch of the Airbus A321XLR at this year’s Paris air show, it is perhaps instructive to cast your mind back two years earlier to the 2017 event.

That edition of the biennial show saw the launch, to similar fanfare, of the Boeing 737 Max 10 – which, at 43.8m (143ft 8in) long, will be the largest variant of the re-engined narrowbody family.

The two aircraft are aimed at different parts of the market – the Max 10 will be able to fly 3,300nm (6,110km) and carry a maximum of 230 passengers, while the new A321neo derivative will have a range of 4,700nm and capacity for 270 passengers – making a comparison imperfect.

However, aside from the venue, there are same parallels between the launches of the two narrowbodies.

By the end of the 2017 Paris air show, Boeing had secured 361 orders for the -10 variant from 16 customers (nine airlines and seven lessors). However, of those commitments, 214 aircraft were covered by swaps from other Max models: a rate of just under 60%.

For the A321XLR, meanwhile, Airbus has secured 15 customers – all but one an airline – who are taking a combined 249 aircraft. Of these, 112 – 45% – are conversions from previous orders.

While that is a lower rate of conversion than seen for the Max 10, the difference between family members is greater for the Airbus product: the A321XLR offers 700nm of additional range

Environmental Monitoring Continues At Old Las Cruces Landfill

On June 20th, more than 30 residents came out to Desert Hills Elementary to hear Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) present the Assessment of Corrective Measures Report (ACM) on what is known today as the “Old Foothills Landfill” (OFL) at 555 S. Sonoma Ranch Blvd. The OFL today is closed to landfilling trash, but was an active, unlined landfill for city trash from 1966 to 1996.

In the early 1990’s the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted new, more stringent regulations that required the nation’s landfills to be lined with multiple liners and with leachate collection systems installed. This was to protect adjacent property or groundwater from contaminants that could be carried by rain and stormwater passing through the waste zone.

Joshua Rosenblatt, LCU regulatory and environmental analyst, explained to attendees at the June meeting, “As part of the OFL closing, seven on-site groundwater monitoring wells and two off-site groundwater monitoring wells were installed, and the 30-year annual and currently semi-annual groundwater sampling program began.” Water testing detected small amounts of elevated concentrations of volatile organic compounds common in a variety of solvents that had reached groundwater below the site from years of rain and stormwater flow before the landfill was closed.” Extensive soil vapor analysis was also conducted in 2017-2018 to determine how much of these solvents remained

Modelers take to clear morning skies in Rush Township

ELYSBURG — Dave Hughes’s passion for piloting radio-controlled model aircraft set in more than 40 years ago.

His fiancé, Diana Yarlet, essentially married into the hobby — and she did so Saturday.

Hughes and Yarlet wed on a grassy airstrip of Kaboodle Road in Rush Township, Northumberland County, where the Susquehanna Valley Modelers’ hosted a fly-in for model aircraft enthusiasts.

Hughes, of Milton, serves as president of the club while his bride is treasurer.

The late Mark Woodland had been one of Hughes’ teachers at Warrior Run High School. A U.S. Air Force veteran and member of a radio control club, Woodland introduced Hughes to the model aircraft in 1976. He’s held onto the hobby ever since.

“I’m intrigued by building, mechanics. Aviation, to me, has always sort of been a mystery. You could take an item that only weighs ounces and make it airborne,” Hughes said Saturday as about 20 pilots readied their model planes and helicopters for takeoff.

Hughes kept his aircraft in a trailer ahead of his wedding. Inside was a Piper Pawnee with a 10-foot wingspan and 11.5 horsepower twin-cylinder gasoline engine. Another was an Edge 540 powered with nitro gas.

It was Hughes who introduced Yarlet to model aircraft. She said she’s come to appreciate aircraft and the hobby itself.

“I didn’t know anything about it,” Yarlet said of “modeling” before sharing a few words about the unique wedding setting an hour before her nuptials. “I’m excited. I think it’s great.”
