Sales of the Tesla Model 3 are introducing thousands of new customers, not only to the Tesla family, but also to the world of electric vehicles. Those new owners are taking to the streets and, more importantly, to the rows of new Superchargers that Tesla is feverishly installing across the United States and around the world as it struggles to keep up with customer demand.

At some Superchargers, Tesla owners are finding stations blocked by awkwardly oversized trucks in what appears to be intentional blocking of the stations. In Superchargers located at hotels, this could be a simple matter of using the spaces for overnight parking, but at others, it looks like an intentional attempt to block Teslas from using the stations to charge.

News VietNamNet

The number of people killed in plane crashes jumped in 2018 compared with the previous year, with more than 500 deaths recorded, new figures show.

Wreckage is recovered from Lion Air Flight 610, which crashed into the sea off Indonesia in October.

Nonetheless, 2018 was still one of the safest years for commercial aviation on record, according to reports from Dutch aviation consultancy To70 and the Netherlands-based Aviation Safety Network (ASN).

The ASN recorded a total of 15 fatal airliner accidents in 2018, leading to 556 deaths, compared with 10 accidents and 44 lives lost in 2017, the safest year in aviation history.

Of those accidents, 12 involved passenger flights and three were cargo flights, the ASN report said. Three of the 15 planes were operated by airlines on the European Union “blacklist,” it said.

Despite the jump in the number of deaths last year, ASN Chief Executive Harro Ranter said the level of aviation safety had increased significantly overall.

“If the accident rate had remained the same as 10 years ago, there would have been 39 fatal accidents last year,” he said. The rate of the year 2000 would have seen 64 fatal accidents. “This shows the enormous progress in terms of safety in the past two decades,” Ranter added.

The figures for 2018 represent a rate of one fatal accident for every 3 million flights, said To70.

The consultancy highlighted the Lion Air crash off Indonesia in October — in which 189 people lost their lives — as the deadliest single incident for the year. The

London museum raising funds to get grounded Snowbirds jet flying

It’s a lofty New Year’s goal, one that would make a London museum a first in Canada.

London’s Jet Aircraft Museum is trying to raise $60,000 to get a vintage jet — the same model the Snowbirds fly — that’s grounded in eastern Ontario up in the air once again.

The non-profit wants to get the CT-114 Tutor jet to its London airport location, where it would begin fully restoring the decades-old piece of Canadiana to flying condition.

There are shells of the Canadian-made jets in other museums, but none that non-military personnel can take for a spin.

“The only aircraft like that that are flying now are with the Canadian military’s Snowbirds,” said Scott Ellinor, president of the Jet Aircraft Museum. “It’s an incredibly rare aircraft to get a hold of. . . I’m sure it will be on a lot of people’s bucket lists to go flying in a Tutor jet.”

The volunteer-run museum has set up an online crowdfunding campaign to raise the $60,000. The money would cover the purchase of the Canadian-built plane, the cost of shipping it from Campbellford, northwest of Belleville, and to help pay for a new engine, Ellinor said.

Already, the museum’s flight maintenance engineer has inspected the plane and determined that, with a lot of work, it can be restored to flight-ready status.

“It will have to be totally rewired, we’ll have to have some parts made. It will be a couple of years before it’s restored to flying condition,” Ellinor said.

Once enough money is raised, a London

Evett’s Model Shop launches GoFundMe to stay alive

2018 had more ups and downs for Evett’s Model Shop than the remote controlled helicopters they sell at the store.

The store celebrated its 70th anniversary in the early part of the year but then announced plans to close after a rent hike left them without an affordable storefront. However, after decades of providing stocking stuffers for generations of locals, the store has given loyal customers one more Christmas present with a new plan to crowdfund a move to a new location.

The company publicized its decision in a Dec. 24 Facebook post. Just one month earlier a plan to move the store to a nearby location had fallen through and closure seemed imminent given a steep rent increase from their current landlord.

“People were borderline inconsolable about the idea [of Evett’s closing],” Evett’s employee Luke Orrin said. “We have a lot of regular customers here…second and third generation people who remember the 1950s when this place moved to this location from Pico Boulevard. People have been shopping here for basically their entire lives.”

The shop now hopes to move to a new venue with a cheaper lease “as nearby as we can keep it.” It has launched a GoFundMe page and hopes to raise $50,000 to cover moving fees, inventory and other expenses.

Orrin said he is hopeful that customers will back Evett’s campaign to stay in business.

“The community seems really into it. If they want to get behind it and show their support, then it’s worth a try,” he said.

From rancid Jell-O to waterbed

He used Jell-O and cornstarch at first, but the squashy gunk, poured into a vinyl bladder, was too heavy to move. And it began to stink after a few days. Then he tried water. “Rancid Jell-O Led to First Water Bed,” a newspaper headline proclaimed at the time.

It was 1967, the Summer of Love, and Charles Hall, a student at San Francisco State, was experimenting with flotation furniture, as he called it then, for an engineering class. (He got an A.) The following year, after some tweaks, his 8-foot-square, heated “Pleasure Pit” debuted at a gallery on Leavenworth Street, as part of a show called “The Happy Happening.”

Hall was living in the Haight-Ashbury, in an apartment in a listing Victorian that rented for $67. It was August, a slow news cycle, Hall recalled, and the Pleasure Pit made news around the country.

It was Hall’s idea that the contraption was both bed and chair, the only piece of furniture you’d ever need. Mattress companies rebuffed him in those early days, as did department stores, so he sold it himself, using his Rambler station wagon to deliver beds to head shops, a member of Jefferson Airplane, a Smothers brother (he can’t remember which), a nudist colony (which bought two) and, inevitably, Hugh Hefner, who ordered one for the Playboy Mansion, upholstered in green velvet.

“I think it got a lot of use there,” Hall said. But he himself was no sybarite; he was earnest about his invention’s benefits: how weightlessness contributed to
