Hand-Me-Down Plane That Crashed Reflects a Cuban Air Industry in Crisis

Mr. Farinas said that Cuban officials even decided in the past against working with the Mexican company, Damojh Aerolíneas, also known as Global Air, after the flight crew that came with the lease got lost in the air on one trip. But they eventually reversed the decision, he said, “probably out of desperation.”

Adel Yzquierdo Rodríguez, Cuba’s transportation minister, said Saturday that Cubana had been renting the plane for less than a month from Damojh, and that under the rental arrangement, the Mexican owner was responsible for the aircraft’s maintenance.

Analysts sometimes disagree about which is more to blame for Cuba’s troubled aviation industry: the American embargo of the island or the country’s own history of economic mismanagement.

Some experts say the sanctions have crippled the nation’s ability to gain access to the vendors and financing needed to get new aircraft. The Cubans themselves have made the case numerous times, blaming the decades-old sanctions for their aging planes, which include Russian-made aircraft that are difficult to find parts for.

“If it were not for the embargo, they would be able to access a robust capital market for financing Western aircraft,” said Samuel Engel, the senior vice president at ICF Consulting and an expert in the international airline industry.

But many analysts say that, while a process is involved, Cuba can indeed get access to such markets, as well as planes.

“The embargo does play a role in inhibiting business with Cuba, but

Boeing’s 737 ramp-up shows signs of strain as unfinished planes pile up in Renton

After several years of reaching higher and higher 737 production rates, Boeing’s ramp-up in Renton is showing signs of severe strain.

More than 40 unfinished 737 jets are stacked around Boeing’s Renton final assembly plant and along the edges of the Renton Municipal Airport, many missing their engines and others awaiting installation of a variety of parts.

The pile-up of planes comes just two months after Boeing raised the hectic pace of production one more notch from 47 jets per month to an unprecedented 52 per month.

Boeing says it’s driven largely by the lingering effects of previous delays in deliveries of jet engines and fuselages from two major suppliers.

A shortage of highly skilled labor is also a factor as Boeing struggles to build more and more of these planes even as many experienced workers last year retired after taking the voluntary buy-outs the company offered.

Boeing says it has temporarily re-deployed to Renton “several hundred” workers from around its Puget Sound facilities, including many from its KC-46 tanker program in Everett, to assist in clearing the logjam of planes. The company has also been aggressively hiring over the past few months, with many of the new hires pegged for work in Renton.

The 737 is Boeing’s cash cow jet. It brings in about half its commercial airplane revenue and provides the funds for its development of new airplanes. Boeing has successfully

In Indonesia Plane Crash Inquiry, New Focus on Possible Aircraft Problems

Flight 610 crashed into the Java Sea, northeast of Jakarta, after less than 15 minutes, following an erratic takeoff that mirrored the problem on its flight from Bali. The flight crew requested permission to return to the Jakarta airport but never turned around.

The plane slammed into the sea at such high speed that the jet fractured upon impact, in some cases disintegrating into a fine powder, Indonesian investigators said.

On Tuesday, Indonesian investigators spent hours interviewing technicians who had tried to repair the airspeed indicator problems by installing multiple spare parts and who had cleared the plane for its final flight from Jakarta to the small city of Pangkal Pinang, Mr. Haryo said.

Those interviews, along with conversations with other aviation technicians, have led Indonesian investigators to conclude that the manual Boeing has published on how to deal with a faulty airspeed indicator contains insufficient information, Mr. Haryo said.

If there is a problem with the Max 8 that causes the plane to record inaccurate data or to nose dive after processing that faulty information, it would not be the first time that a new aircraft model has faced such problems.

Airbus, for instance, experienced a problem with the computerized filtering of air data that is believed to have caused a relatively new model of the A330 to dive suddenly. In 2008, Qantas Flight 72, en route from Singapore to Perth, began processing incorrect speed and angle of attack readings. The plane’s

DeLand airport businessman arrested, accused of gutting customers plane – Daytona Beach News

A DeLand airport business owner is accused of siphoning fuel and stealing parts worth $55,000 from a plane that didn’t belong to him, according to the DeLand Police Department.

The investigation also revealed that Lippo has removed other parts from other planes and has charged customers for services and repairs to aircraft that were never completed, police said.

As of Wednesday, Joseph Lippo, 60, has been charged with multiple counts of grand theft. He was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail and released after posting $15,000 bail, records show. Lippo was reached at his business Thursday and declined comment.

Detectives are still investigating to see if Lippo committed other crimes, city spokesman Chris Graham said.

“During the investigation, it was discovered that the owner and operator had been removing functional parts from planes, installing them in other planes and charging the owners for replacement parts in the original planes,” according to a police statement.

Lippo also is suspected of victimizing more customers by charging them for services he never provided, possibly defrauding customers in the tens of thousands of dollars, police said.

DeLand police began investigating in July after a Edd Conn reported to them that Lippo, owner and operator of JL Aircraft Services, had removed parts from his plane without his permission, according to a police report. Conn told police he found out about it after someone from an airplane supply store in Fort Lauderdale called to tell Conn he had a radio that belonged to him, the report stated.

Conn, 76, owned

Aircraft parts supplier signs deal with airline | 2018-11-12 | Grand Rapids Business Journal

A supplier of aircraft parts in the region has signed a long-term deal with a new client.

Tennessee-based Contour Airlines now has access to Norton Shores-based AeroVision International’s inventory of components, which will be used to support Contour’s growing fleet of ERJ 135 and 145 aircraft.

Parts will be sent from AeroVision’s main facility to Contour’s maintenance facilities in Tennessee, Georgia, Arizona, California and West Virginia.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“AeroVision is customizing service solutions for Contour Airlines to meet their specific operational, financial and maintenance requirements,” said Pete Gibson, VP of sales and marketing, AeroVision International.

Matthew Chaifetz, CEO of Contour Airlines, added: “As we evaluated options to support our rapid growth, it became clear that AeroVision was the ideal business partner, willing to adapt to a model that best fits our business, rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all approach.”

AeroVision

Founded in 2003, AeroVision International supplies business and regional commuter jet engines and engine parts to operators and maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities around the world.

AeroVision also offers sales and leasing of aircraft, engines, auxiliary power units, avionics and landing gear, as well as the outright or exchange sales of major internal and external spare parts.

Contour Airlines

Contour Airlines is the scheduled service brand of Contour Aviation, formed in 1982.
