737MAX; 737MAX-8: TakeOff from Renton Field (Boeing)

On Tuesday, Boeing signed its first deal for the 737 MAX jet since the deadly crashes that led to a temporary ban of the plane’s use in the U.S. and global airspace at the Paris Air Show.

Months after the crashes, the company’s chief executive admitted Boeing made a “mistake” in how it handled the controversy which continues to unfold.

FOX Business takes a look at the developments in the following timeline which examines how the company addressed the tragedy and how it is attempting to move forward with the 737 MAX jet, once considered its most promising new plane.

August 30, 2011

Boeing publicly announces the 737 MAX that, according to then-Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh, “will deliver improved fuel efficiency and lowest operating costs in a single-aisle market.”

“This, coupled with industry-leading reliability and maintainability, is what customers have told us they want. As a result, we are seeing overwhelming demand for this new and improved version of the 737. We are working with our customers to finalize these and other agreements in the weeks and months ahead.”

Boeing rolls out its first 737 MAX jet in Renton, Washington with a goal of a first flight the following year.

According to the press release announcing the launch, “The new single-aisle airplane will deliver 20 percent lower fuel use than the first Next-Generation 737s and

The Global Hawk Drone Iran Shot Down Was a $220M Surveillance Monster

Early Thursday morning, Iran shot down a United States unmanned aerial vehicle over the Strait of Hormuz, which runs between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Iran identified the drone as an RQ-4A Global Hawk, a $220 million UAV that acts as a massive surveillance platform in the sky. The attack marks an escalation with tensions already running high between the US and Iran—particularly because of the value and technical sensitivity of the downed drone.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Thursday that the Northrup Grumman-made Global Hawk—part of a multibillion-dollar program that dates back to 2001—had entered Iranian airspace and crashed in Iranian waters; US Central Command confirmed the time and general location of the attack, but insists that the drone was flying in international airspace.

The incident comes on the heels of another situation last week in which the US accused Iran of attacking two fuel tankers in the Gulf of Oman. The US also said that Iran had attempted to shoot down a different UAV—an MQ-9 Reaper drone—but failed. The Pentagon also linked Iran to an attack on a Reaper drone in Yemen two weeks ago that caused the vehicle to crash. Thursday’s attack, though, targeted a massive and much more expensive surveillance drone, and likely represents a more definite escalation.

“There’s a lot going on here, and we’re probably only seeing some of it,”

Bella Hadid apologized for Instagram story that insulted parts of the Arab community

Supermodel Bella Hadid posted an apology to her Arab followers across her social media feeds on Monday after the Palestinian-American’s Sunday Instagram story sparked outrage.

A since-disappeared Instagram story showed Hadid’s shoe facing a row of planes, including one plane from Saudi Arabia and one from the United Arab Emirates, along with the caption “anotha one.” Showing the sole of your shoe is an insult in Arab culture, and the photo has also been perceived as showing Hadid kicking the planes.

In her apology, Hadid wrote “The photo of my shoe on my Story yesterday had NOTHING to do with politics.”

In angry comments across social media on Hadid and her family’s accounts, especially on Instagram, thousands of users have spammed shoe emojis, flag emojis for Saudia Arabia and the UAE, and green heart emojis. Many comments appear to be either social media bots or copy-and-pasted sentences and phrases accusing Hadid of insulting Arab countries that have donated to and defended Palestine.

These comments reference Hadid’s political support of Palestine. Both Hadid sisters have been criticized in the past for their comments about their Middle Eastern heritage and Muslim faith, along with their appearances on magazine covers like Vogue Arabia.

On Twitter, some anger has been directed toward brands that work with Hadid, including Dior and Versace, with users threatening to boycott products. Others

Celebrating the Engineers behind the First Moon Landing

When my father reached his 80s, I realized I’d never asked him much about his career as an engineer with NASA. I set out to learn all I could about the day-to-day worries, stumbles and triumphs he and his Apollo-era colleagues experienced. My first conversations with him set off years of research, a chain of interviews and eventually a book, The Apollo Chronicles: Engineering America’s First Moon Missions.

He hauled out a box of mementos. From the pins, patches and plaques, he pulled out one of his 1960s research articles. “Whoa,” I whispered. It was crowded with matrices and equations. At a time when a voyage away from the Earth was still just a dream, this paper detailed the mathematical transfer of a spacecraft from an Earth-centered coordinate origin to that of another world.

When John F. Kennedy announced his moon challenge to the nation in 1961, thousands of minds set fervently to work. Incredulous, they gazed at legions of imposing problems: unsteady, exploding rockets; a largely mysterious lunar surface; and trajectory calculations full of best guesses. With less than nine years to complete a lunar landing, the engineers didn’t have a script. As my father’s colleague Marlowe Cassetti put it, “I can think of a toddler taking a first couple of steps and being unsure, and then you say, ‘In a couple of years, he’s going to run a marathon.’”

I find NASA’s scramble of 1962 especially inspiring. Waves of employees like Cassetti moved from Langley, Virginia, to Houston. Leaving scenic

Air Supremacy takes flight over Goshen | Local News

GOSHEN — A week after jets flew over the Goshen Municipal Airport for America’s Freedom Fest, the three-day Air Supremacy Over Goshen, a large-scale model airplane show, is in full-swing in the same skies.

Chuck Hamilton, president of the model airshow, is very proud of what he has helped to create in Goshen, especially the number of people, both pilots and spectators, who come out to the event.

The show, which has now been going on for three years, usually draws in around 100 to 150 pilots from all across the country and more than 3,000 spectators.

“We’ve got pilots coming from 15 different states. These are people who are utilizing the latest model airplane technology,” Hamilton said. “The amount of work and dedication these people put into their planes is incredible.”

Longtime model airplane enthusiast Mark Klingler traveled all the way from Youngstown, Ohio, to attend the Air Supremacy show.

“This is my first time here, but I really like it so far,” Klingler said.

Klingler has been particularly impressed by the local food, having been to both Lux Café in Goshen and Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury.

According to Hamilton, there are pilots of all social classes who attend the show.

“We have doctors, lawyers, plumbers, business men who come out. And they’re all united in their love for planes,” Hamilton said.

Jeff Michael, a Michigan model airplane pilot, said the things he likes the most about the airshow are the people, the grass runway and the community of pilots. Michael also mentioned that the reasonable prices
