Model Airplanes

This past week the Reading Regional Airport held a Drone Safety presentation to educate the public on the proper way to operate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Both hobbyist and commercial drone operators attended, some traveling from as far away as the Lehigh Valley and Chester County. Held in the terminal building, the two hour presentation was hosted by Zack Tempesco, Director of Operations for the airport, and John Fries of 610drone.com.

For those who didn’t attend the presentation, here is the run down. All users, recreational or commercial, must register their drones with the FAA, the cost is $5 (Toy drones under .55 lbs are exempt). Drones should be flown at or below 400 feet and must be within your line of sight. Operators must be aware of FAA airspace restrictions in the area they fly.

A few no-no’s include never flying near aircraft, (You must notify the tower if you fly within 5 miles of airport), never fly over groups of people, public events, or stadiums full of people. Don’t fly near emergencies such as fires or storm recovery efforts, and (this should be obvious) never fly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

All of this seems restrictive right, you just bough it at Walmart… No matter where you purchased your drone, or how much you spent, Tempesco suggests the best place to start is joining a local model aircraft club. Clubs are for more than fixed wing model airplanes. Tempesco says many

Don Chadwick, 82, is an industrial designer and co-creator of Herman Miller Inc.’s Aeron chair. The ergonomic office seat was introduced in 1994 and first became popular with technology in the late 1990s. It is included in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. He spoke with Marc Myers.

My first chair was nothing special. I was 12 when my parents bought me a standard desk and upholstered chair. Furniture design wasn’t a passion yet. I was more focused on building model trains and airplanes.

James Allen Cole, 72, of Cleveland, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019, at his home.  

He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War.  James was a retired truck driver and enjoyed radio controlled model airplanes and hot rods. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Teeter Cole; two brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Nadine Watts Cole of Cleveland; six children: Edward Coffelt of Chattanooga, Peggy McCoy of Carson City, Ne., John Pearon of Richmond, Va., Jennie Prather of Cleveland, Timothy Pearon of Jasper, Tn. and Angelia Askins of Chattanooga; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Pete Cole of California and William “Hoot” Cole of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home.
