Print your city? 3D printing is revolutionizing urban futures

(MENAFN – The Conversation) The Fabrication City concept puts manufacturing back in the hands of communities — using 3D printers. It could have far-reaching implications for economic development, environmental sustainability, inclusion and other benefits. The use of 3D printing provides cities with opportunities through their local innovators and entrepreneurs.

The process of 3D printing layers materials to create three-dimensional objects using digital equipment. Local makers are given access to fabrication labs equipped with technology to learn and this incubation environment can develop future entrepreneurs.

The fabrication city model emerged around 2011, developed by the MIT’s Centre for Bits and Atoms and by over 1,000 Maker Centres that give local makers access to 3D printing and other production tools. There are also neighbourhoods and city clusters that facilitate the maker movement .

There are opportunities for individuals and groups to create and market products from used or new materials using a digital device and additive technology . By facilitating these activities, cities can radically transform the way production and consumption happens within their region. Interconnecting people and processes to create local and regional inclusive innovation and economic growth while also reducing environmental impacts. What might we re-use if we practice more inclusive innovation and how might we change the local economy if we support local sourcing?

Randy Waldman: The Jazz Pilot | General Aviation News

He calls himself the Jazz Pilot. Grammy-winning pianist and arranger Randy Waldman is the most famous musician perhaps you’ve never heard of. He’s also one of the most popular helicopter instructors in Los Angeles, flying out of Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. In 2003 he set a helicopter speed record in a Bell 206.

A native of Chicago, when he was 21, Waldman went on tour with Frank Sinatra. For the past 38 years he’s performed with and arranged for Barbra Streisand. He’s recorded and arranged for everyone from Michael Jackson to Dolly Parton to James Taylor. He’s performed with everyone from Billy Joel to Stevie Wonder to Eric Clapton. He’s produced everyone from Patti LaBelle to Kenny G to Olivia Newton John.

His music can be heard on major motion pictures as diverse as Forrest Gump, Mission Impossible, Titanic, and dozens of others. He also records his own albums. His most recent one, SuperHeroes, was nominated for two Grammy awards this year. One track on it, Spiderman Theme, won the best arrangement category.

SuperHeroes is a conglomeration of jazz-interpreted theme music of programs from Batman to Super Chicken with guest appearances by a veritable who’s who of the genre, including pianist Chick Corea; guitarist George Benson; trumpeters Arturo Sandoval, Wynton Marsalis, and Randy Brecker; saxophonists Chris Potter and Joe Lovano; clarinetist Eddie Daniels; drummers Steve Gadd and Vinnie Colaiuta; bassist Carlitos del Puerto; and the vocal group Take 6.

Waldman sporadically plays with a pickup band around Los Angeles time and schedule permitting, but

Startup Airline Starlux Is About To Commit To Buying 17 New Airbus A350’s

Starlux recently put in an order to buy a total of 17 new Airbus A350 model airplanes. The aircraft will be the latest addition to Starlux’s all Airbus fleet. The planes are expected to be delivered between 2021 and 2024.

Starlux commits to buy 17 Airbus A350s for its fleet via Airbus.

Order Confirmation

The official launch date for the Starlux airline is approaching, and it is still preparing for its inaugural flights. Starlux recently submitted an order to buy 17 more Airbus jets to add to their fleet. The total amount of planes to be delivered includes two different models: the A350-1000 and A350-900.

The Airbus A350-1000 is a larger model of the airplane and is expected to be delivered starting Q3 in 2022. The company ordered 12 of this model. The Airbus A350-900 is a smaller model, of which Starlux will be acquiring five. These planes will be delivered sooner, as early as late 2021. While these planes won’t be delivered in time for the Starlux’s launch, it’s a much-needed aircraft for the benefit of Starlux’s operations.

The Airbus A350 models will complement the complete Airbus fleet. It’s expected that the plane will mainly be used for transpacific flights. Even the chairman of Starlux, Chang Kuo-Wei, is excited to the recent order. He stated, “As a pilot myself, I personally experienced the test-flight of the A350-1000. Its outstanding performance really amazed me.”

Energizer also has a folding phone, and it doesn’t completely suck

With Energizer grabbing headlines with its 18,000mAh smartphone, the company is back for more with the foldable Power Max P8100S.

Quietly announced during MWC 2019, the Power Max P8100S features two displays — a 6-inch display with Full HD+ resolution on the outside and an 8.1-inch display with Full HD+ resolution on the inside. The phone is unlike the Huawei Mate X, which features one 8-inch display that turns into two smaller displays when folded.

We didn’t get a chance to use any of the displays on the Power Max P8100S, since the phone was in a glass case. According to Energizer, Samsung and Huawei have priority at the production factories where these displays are made. As a result, Energizer was unable to get all the parts for the model shown off in Barcelona.

Even so, this might be the ugliest hinge design for a foldable smartphone we’ve seen so far. The hinge’s design reminds me of the part of the jetway that looks like an accordion and extends to the airplane. The design is likely cost-effective for Energizer, but it also has us a bit concerned about how well it’ll hold up over time.

At least the rest of the Power Max P8100S reads off like a proper 2019 flagship smartphone. The phone features dual rear 48- and 12-megapixel cameras, a 24MP selfie camera, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage, and a

China-developed MA700 turboprop to roll off production line in Sept.

he China-developed MA700 turboprop aircraft has entered the trial-manufacturing and test phase, announced the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) Friday.

The first MA700 is expected to roll off the production line this September.

The MA700 is the third member of China’s “Morden Ark(MA)” regional airplane family following the MA60 and MA600. The AVIC is striving to conduct the maiden flight by the end of 2019, said AVIC.

It is developed by the AVIC XAC Commercial Aircraft (AVIC XACC) in Xi’an, in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.

By the end of 2018, the company started the major parts assembly work of the plane’s nose, forebody and cargo, and its wings are already in parts assembly.

The MA700 turboprop is designed with a maximum speed of 637 km per hour and a single-engine ceiling of 5,400 meters.

The model is adaptive to airports with high temperatures, high altitudes and short runway conditions. It is capable of operating in complex air route conditions.

To date, it has received 285 intended orders from 11 customers at home and abroad.

Bat Flight Inspires Next Generation of Wing Design

Bats have inspired the design of flying vehicles for more than a century. Now, new computer modeling of bats wings and their flight patterns will help inspire the next generation of wing design.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia and the National University of Singapore have developed a comprehensive 3D computer model of bat wing-flapping flight that might help drone and airplane designers create more nimble vehicles.

The model gives never-before-seen insight into the flight flapping mechanisms of batwings. This information might be the key to a new era of aviation design. The high-fidelity model is scalable and has the potential to be used by designers and engineers alike.

Bats wings flex and adapt to air conditions

“Bats can navigate tight spaces and negotiate gusts of wind with apparent ease,” says Rajeev Jaiman, the senior author of the study and a professor of mechanical engineering at UBC.

“By understanding how they do what they do, we may be able to design flying devices that operate more effectively than before, including in emergency and military situations.”

Flapping wings designs have proven difficult for humans to master, however they hold many advantages of fixed-wing flight. Flapping wings are quieter and provide greater maneuverability but have proven to be difficult to translate to human-scaled machines.
