Once and a while you just need a holiday, I bet you know what I mean. People say it is impulsive to think so, but who cares. It wouldn’t be a surprise to me if you had it yourself once. You just have to take a break and if you are the proud owner of a vintage motorbike you just start it and start driving. So that is what I did and I stepped on my precious Harley Davidson and packed my things and took off together with my beautiful wife.
Now, we always wanted to visit Italy and Greece and we decided those beautiful countries were our target. Driving through the mountains and environment of Switzerland was great and my old Harley just sounded right when we climbed the Swiss mountains time and time again. But then again, you can always count on a Harley Davidson. If you own a Harley yourself, you probably also know that driving through the mountains is not a problem at all. And so I reached the Italian border.
Italy was different than Switzerland though. Those nut jobs in Italy do not really know how to drive a car properly and all they seem to want to do, is drive each other from the road. Needless to say, when we drove from the north of Italy to Rome, we had some interesting experiences. Especially when you had paid for the toll roads and had to get from 20 lanes into 3… Boy! On the other hand, when you drive your Harley through the Italian mainland, you get a lot of admiration for driving your machine. The Italians love them!
After visiting the beautiful and ancient city of Rome (a must see), we traveled to the other side of the Italian mainland and visited Ancona, where we hopped onto the ferry to Greece. When we arrived in Greece we decided to head for Athens (a must see) but when we arrived there (and visited the Acropolis) we decided it was too humid and too hot to stay there too long. So we went to Piraeus and took the ferry to Crete. We really explored this island and its countryside. We also visited a lot of historic and really ancient places and cities with beautiful names like Chania, Malia and Chersonesos (where it seemed like a lot of people were drinking a lot of beer and had a lot of fun).
Crete is an island that has a lot to offer and we enjoyed it every second of the day. It is absolutely beautiful. And of course while we were driving, our Harley’s were drawing a lot of attention. We never saw any other Harley while we were driving through the countryside, which actually surprised us a bit. When we passed, the Greeks were even waving sometimes and we saw a lot of smiling faces. Because that is one thing we learned from our trip: the Greeks are famous for their hospitality, that is for sure. So if you want to make a trip yourself, we can highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.
